Local Area Information
In the village of St Martin there is a boulangerie/grocer, a general store and a bar/restaurant and a post office.
The nearest towns with all facilities are:
Montpon-Menesterol (8 kms)
St Foy La Grande (12 kms).
Bergerac (30 kms)
Libourne (30 kms)
Bordeaux (80 kms - about 45 minutes on the A89)
There is a very good park and ride into Bordeaux if you don't want to worry about driving into the centre and parking.
SHOPPING
There are many supermarkets within easy reach.
MARKETS
The markets are superb, full of lovely fresh produce and almost everything else you could want. Much more fun than the supermarkets. You can find a market locally every day of the week. In the information pack we supply a detailed map of what markets are on where and when.
RESTAURANTS
There are many restaurants in the area to suit all budgets, full details are in the information pack at the gite.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
In our tourist pack we give detailed information on a huge range of tourist attractions saving you from having to trawl through the local tourist office and getting your holiday off to a head start!
There are three leisure lakes within easy reach. The nearest is Lac de Gurson and in the summer has cafes/restaurants around the edge of the lake so you can make a day of it. Slightly further afield are the lakes of La Jemaye and Le Paradou, well worth a visit.
Sacheverel is situated between the rivers Isle and Dordogne both of which provide excellent facilities for canoeing and kayaking.
A short distance away Pro Glisse caters for those who like to water ski, quad bike etc
At Velines visit the beautiful gardens at Sardy or venture further afield to the gardens at Terrasson.
At the nearby village of Le Pizou once a week throughout August public evening meals are held in the town square. There is a wide variety of stall holders selling hot and cold food including a whole barbecued lamb/pig. Musical entertainement is also provided and a good time is had by all!
Also throughout the summer season nearly every village has its fete and of course don't forget Bastille day on July 14th: fireworks, food, wine and merriment!
HISTORY and PREHISTORY
The Dordogne region is full of history. It boasts many 13th century bastide towns with beautiful arcaded squares, domed fortified churches, over a thousand castles and many other reminders of the Hundred Years War between the English and the French.
The town of Sarlat is a must and has a wonderful market on a Saturday.
For anyone interested in Pre-history it is the area of Cro-Magnon man, and the museum of Pre-History at Les Eyzies, the cave paintings at Lascaux and other sites are simply unforgettable.
There are also lots fascinating caves full of stalactites/stalacmites, petrified waterfalls and many other amazing geological features. Well worth a visit.
FOOD and WINE
This is one of the gourmet regions of France famous for the truffle much prized (and indeed priced accordingly), foie gras, duck and goose.
The world famous wine growing regions of Bordeaux and Bergerac are on your doorstep and the beautiful mediaeval town of St Emilion, possibly the most famous of them all, is 30 minutes drive away. You can also follow the wine route.
